Enough Tuna to Last Through the Winter

Leslie Jordan and her new husband Jerome went out with daughter Shelby and her friend Jillian on our 32' RedBeam with Captain Marcial. Leslie and Jerome wed this past Tuesday on famous and beautiful Pedregal beach and decided to celebrate their amor fishing with us today and doing a great job at it! They fished Golden Gate on the Pacific side just thirteen miles offshore where the water was at eighty five degrees. They caught 8 Tuna ranging from twenty to forty pounds and on their way back caught 3 Dorado weighing up to twenty pounds.

Tom, Greg and Steven from Minnesota made me laugh more than usual this morning and even as they arrived back after an eight hour fishing trip they managed to keep the humor running high. Great anglers that they are, they didn't pout after coming back with just one Tuna. "That's why it's called fishing" said Greg. Lucky for them they'll also be going out on Saturday and get another try at reeling in a big Tuna. One thing is for sure, they won't let anything get in their way when it comes to having a good time.

AJ and his wife from California went out on our 32' RumRunnin with Captain Javier and Mate Manuel. They went off to Golden Gate, about twelve miles offshore and caught 5 Tuna. Three of the Tuna were quite large and took us forever to vacuum seal. The three largest Tuna weighed 120lbs, 95lbs and 45 pounds. They'll be taking their fish home with them tomorrow once it gets all frozen and will have enough Tuna meat to get them through the winter.

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo - The Independent Fleet

Captain Temo Verboonen was much more upbeat this week, albeit, there were almost no anglers fishing the boats. He reported 3 days of bad weather and port closures but once the weather cleared up, the dorado bite was back on again with some quality sized dorado in the mix. While the billfish catches remained very slow, the inshore catches came back for roosterfish along the beaches, both north & south of the Bay and the pampano catches were very good at the "White Rocks" using live anchovettas on the bottom.

Mazatlan - The Aries Fleet

Thu Sep 10 2009, 03:01PM

The full moon wreaked havoc on the Mazatlan bite and the boats, both inshore and offshore, reported very slow action for the past week which also coincided with a very slow week for anglers.  The overall offshore report for 9 days fished reflected 1 sailfish and 8 dorado for the total effort and only a single super panga fishing day was reported that reflected 3 dorado.

Mazatlan Climate:  A sun-cloud mix of days with temps from 75 nights to 90 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions:  Mostly calm throughout the area with temps at 85-86 degrees and almost no swell.

Best Fishing Area:  There was no concentration of fish in any location and the boats were scattered far and wide in search of game fish.

Best Lure/Bait:  All of the offshore fish were taken on rigged trolling baits, (mullet).

Cabo San Lucas - The Gaviota Fleet

Thu Sep 10 2009, 03:00PM

"Gaviota VI", skippered by Captain Plutarco Cesena, was high boat for the week and reported the only striper caught for the week; checking in with 5 stripers and 11 dorado for 6 fishing days. "Tuna Time", skippered by Captain Christian Lopez, reported in for two fishing days and reflected 1 blue marlin, (280 lbs.) 2 dorado, 2 wahoo and 16 yellowfin tuna. The overall catches for 27 combined fishing days reflected 1 blue marlin, 5 stripers released, 2 wahoo, 48 dorado and 72 yellowfin tuna, (14-50 lbs.). The full moon week had certainly slowed the fishing for most of the boats and made the catching more difficult.

Where did everyone go?

Seems like everyone came down to Cabo before Labor Day and enjoyed the long weekend, but headed home late Monday. Only one boat went out today, Liz and Fred Smith from Tampa, Florida. Had a nice conversation with Liz and Fred before their charter and they mentioned how they never have any time for fishing back in Tampa. That's why you come on vacation right?

Heading towards the Golden Gate on the Pacific in mid 80's water with clear skies. All was going well on the way up to the bank, but when Omar spotted a school of Porpoise and Tuna and started the troll, Liz unfortunately started to feel ill. Liz hung in like a trooper, long enough for Fred to bring in a nice size Tuna, but after that it was time to head back to stable grounds of land.

Dramamine is always a good idea not only the morning of, but also the night before if anyone is ever worried about sea-sickness. Hopefully we'll see Liz and Fred back in Cabo soon and the seas will agree with everyone.
